The Islamic Shura Council of Southern California is proud to name Abdul Aziz as our Muslim of the Week!
A hero is someone who puts the lives of others ahead of themselves. This past week, Abdul Aziz showed himself to be a hero in his community.
This past Friday, a gunman attacked 2 New Zealand mosques during their Friday prayers, taking 50 lives. During the attack on the second mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, Abdul Aziz managed to chase away the gunman from the mosque. Equipped with a credit card machine and later an empty, discarded firearm, Aziz caused the shooter to flee in his vehicle away from the scene.
A humble man, Aziz has not embraced being named a hero. Instead, he asserts that his. actions were what anyone else would have done. When asked about the actions he took in saving his fellow Muslims, Aziz said, “You don’t have much time to think, whatever you think of, you just do it, you know.”
While he may not see himself as a hero, many people in his community and around the world would disagree.
For valiantly and selflessly risking his life for the safety of others, we name Abdul Aziz as our newest Muslim of the Week.
