April 12, 2021

On behalf of all of us at the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, we wish you and your family and blessed and joyous Ramadan!

We invite you to tune in each evening on our YouTube or Facebook page, to our 30 with 30 videos, Building Daily Habits, and new this Ramadan, Quran recitation with English Translation, and much more insha’Allah!

Based on the decision of the Fiqh Council of North America, the Shura Council is pleased to announce that the dates of Ramadan and Eidul Fitr for the year 2021/1442 AH are expected to be as follows, insha’Allah.

Ramadan 1442 AH:

The Astronomical New Moon is on Monday, April 12, 2021, at 2:33 Universal Time. On that day, everywhere in North and South America at sunset, the elongation is at least 8 degrees and the moon is at least 5 degrees above the sun. Therefore, the first day of Ramadan 1442 is on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, insha’Allah. Taraweeh prayer will start on Monday night April 12.

Eidul Fitr 1442 AH:

The Astronomical New Moon is on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at 19:02 Universal Time. On that day there is no place on earth where at sunset the elongation is 8 degrees and the moon is 5 degrees above the sun. Therefore Shawwal 1442 cannot start the next day. Hence the first day of Shawwal is on Thursday, May 13, 2021, insha’Allah. Eidul Fitr will be on Thursday, May 13, 2021.

In regards to these blessed occasions, we are reminded to keep in mind that there are allowances for valid scholarly differences of opinion in determining the beginning and end of the auspicious month of Ramadan. Mutual respect and humility are pillars of the requirement for unity as we collectively strive to please our Creator in all aspects of our lives.

We encourage every organization and individual to follow that which is most unifying for the community, including consultation with religious leadership. More specific Ramadan guidance, including reminders and recommendations, can be found on our website.

May Allah keep us on the straight path, facilitate us to have a blessed and joyous Ramadan, and accept our devotional acts solely for His sake, Ameen.

The Islamic Shura Council was formed on April 20, 1995, by the Muslim leadership as a  community-based nonprofit – 501(c)3 organization. This was a response to fill the need for an umbrella organization representing and advocating on behalf of the growing number of mosques and Muslim organizations in Southern California. It now has an impressive membership of 60 mosques and Muslim organizations. The organization also coordinated outreach campaigns and workshops on relevant issues for its constituencies. The linguistic meaning of Shura is the procedure of making decisions by mutual consultation and consensus. More History Coming Soon…
